Lifeguard (Work-Study)

Keuka College - Keuka Park, NY

Under general supervision, ensures the safety of patrons and assists with aquatic programs at the Waterfront (Point Neamo) at Keuka College by preventing and responding to emergencies.

Essential Responsibilites

  • Ensure the safety of patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies
  • Rescues patrons and performs appropriate follow-up procedures, including the proper use of equipment in the performance of first aid
  • Enforces policies, rules, and regulations. Safeguards and regulates conduct of Waterfront patrons
  • Display a high degree of professionalism, leadership and safety at all times
  • Enforce all aquatic facility policies and regulations
  • Perform a daily facility inspection and complete all records and reports
  • Participate in scheduled in-service training sessions
  • Maintain an appropriate fitness level (swimming skills, strength and endurance, etc.)
  • Clean and organize all the boathouse, equipment, and general waterfront facility
  • Performs work safely in accordance with departmental safety procedures. Operates equipment safely and reports any unsafe work conditions or practice to supervisor
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor or Head Lifeguard

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Work-Study Eligible (Federal or Keuka).
  2. Current Keuka College student in the on-campus traditional undergraduate program.
  3. Maintain American Red Cross Lifeguarding, Waterfront, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certifications.
  4. Certification in NYS Boating Safety preferred.
  5. Pre-employment testing of lifeguarding knowledge and skills.
  6. Thorough knowledge and application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques.
  7. An understanding of facility characteristics, rules, policies and procedures.
  8. Leadership and public relations skills.
  9. Decision-making skills.
  10. Enthusiastic with a desire to work hard and have fun.

Physical Requirements

  • Some weekend and evening hours required
  • Ability to lift a person out of water (average weight 150 lbs).
  • Perform all skills required for Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR certifications and in-service trainings
  • Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time in outside air temperatures and conditions
  • Comfortable in water
  • While performing duties of this job, employee is frequently required to stand; walk; sit; use and to finger, handle or feel; reach with arms and hands. Employee must be able to talk, hear, taste, smell and see (both near and far).
  • Occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch.
  • Outdoor weather conditions with little to no temperature control; is routinely exposed to the sun, may be exposed to extreme heat, cold, wind and rain; works on uneven and/or slippery surfaces and is periodically exposed to hazardous conditions/situations.
