Art Teacher

The Art Teacher is responsible for providing a success-oriented learning and/or skills-building experience for designated students.

The Art Teacher demonstrates strong classroom/learning environment and management skills using boundaries and rules to promote students’ self-management and responsibility, and is adept at behavior management and recognizing the need for prevention, intervention and problem-solving techniques. The person in this position is an adult role model for students and colleagues in all behaviors including communication, hygiene, and appearance, management of self, response to stress / challenges and in the demonstration of professional relationships with others. As a member of an interdisciplinary team and child advocate, the Art Teacher demonstrates (on the job) a broad understanding of students’ educational, social and personal challenges and capabilities, and also demonstrates a commitment to quality through the effective use of resources including and not limited to time, materials, technology and personnel.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Participating in the development and implementation of the general and/or individualized education program appropriate to the developmental needs of the student, through appropriate assessment, testing, direct observation and a review of the relevant records.
  • Effectively evaluating the student’s individual education plan through individual and/or group learning experiences.
  • Demonstrating specialized knowledge and a strong understanding of various instructional techniques and differentiates instruction to meet the varied learning styles and needs of students.
  • Knowledgeable about state and local education standards to assure that education delivered meets all requirements and seeks clarification as needed.
  • Facilitating student success by demonstrating the ability to provide appropriate expectations and boundaries that promote and maintain a safe environment conducive to learning.
  • Recognizing and addressing aggressive student behavior, and is trained and proficient in behavior management and Therapeutic Crisis Intervention techniques, including the use of physical intervention (holds).
  • Being an involved member of treatment teams demonstrating cooperation with team members and others in order to facilitate positive and efficient outcomes.
  • Maintaining all required recordkeeping to meet individual education plans and regulatory requirements.
  • Attending meetings as required and is a willing participant in new initiatives and team activities.
  • Effectively leads, utilizes and works with the teaching assistant to facilitate a collaborative working relationship to support students in the learning process.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree with 1-3 years’ experience preferred. NYS Certified Teacher in Art is required. Candidates must have valid NY State Driver's License and must meet agency driving and insurance standards.
